Wrong Medication Prescribed For Three Years
Three years after having been prescribed hormone replacement therapy, Janice was told she had been taking a dangerously high dose, increasing her risk of cancer.
When Janice began to suffer from hot flushes and dizziness, she was told that she was going through the menopause. The doctor advised that she take hormone replacement therapy (HRT). However, upon the advice of a friend Janice decided to try a natural herbal remedy instead. Unfortunately this did not relieve her symptoms, so two years later she returned once again to the same medical centre.
Janice told the doctor she was still experiencing hot flushes, so he prescribed Premarin, a type of HRT. She took the medication once a day, as advised, and soon noticed that her hot flushes subsided. But on the flip-side she began to suffer some unpleasant side-effects, including heavy irregular bleeding and blood clots. These symptoms continued for the following year and made Janice feel very tired and run-down. She had mood swings and became very short-tempered.
Moving house, Janice registered with a new GP. She was given a health check, during which her blood pressure was taken and her medication written down. No further questions were asked and Janice continued with the same prescription.
Over the next year Janice's bleeding and blood clots began to get a lot worse. She could not leave the house because within minutes of leaving the bathroom her clothes would be stained with blood. She had trouble sleeping and lost a lot of weight.
Eventually Janice became so worried that she attended an obstetrician and gynaecologist. He was absolutely shocked that she had been prescribed Premarin and informed her that she had been on the highest dosage possible.
The consultant said it was bad practice to prescribe this method of HRT treatment, and it was likely that this had caused the heavy and irregular bleeding and clots. He also said that because of the prescription, Janice had an increased risk of breast and cervical cancer, but thankfully all following cancer tests came back negative.
After seeing the consultant, Janice contacted us to talk about her experience. We suggested that she should not have been wrongly prescribed the highest dose of Premarin, and this had caused her unnecessary pain and suffering. We helped her claim £4,000 compensation.
