Recurrence of Bunion After Surgery

Recurrence of Bunion After Surgery

Erin's bunion quickly recurred after surgery. Investigations found that the original operation had been negligently performed, meaning she needed corrective procedure.

In 2010 Erin was referred to an orthopaedic specialist for her bunions. She had a bunion on both feet and they were causing her pain and discomfort.

She was booked in to have them surgically corrected. Two procedures were required, with the left-sided bunionectomy being carried out first. She made a good recovery, so a right-sided bunionectomy was performed some months later.

Initially Erin made a good recovery from the second operation, and after a couple of months she was advised to fully weight-bear. However, shortly afterwards, Erin visited her GP because of pain in her right big toe. At this point, she was given stronger pain-killers.

However, Erin's condition worsened and, later that year, she visited her GP again. She reported that her right big toe had been sticking upwards and inwards. It was painful to walk on and she found it hard to put it in its proper anatomical position.

Erin was referred back to the orthopaedic team for review. It was then confirmed that there had been a malalignment of the big toe and that corrective surgery would be needed. This was performed a couple of months later.

Unfortunately Erin's recovery was hindered by an infection which took a long time to clear-up. This adversely affected the healing process and she has been left with a poor outcome. She continues to suffer pain, along with puckered skin and a significantly shortened big toe.

We helped Erin make a claim against the surgeon who performed the right bunionectomy. He misplaced a screw during the procedure and failed to correct the soft tissue. These mistakes caused the bunion to rapidly recur.

Consequently Erin needed corrective surgery, which in turn led her to suffer an infection and non-union of the bone. She has been left with a substandard outcome. Her right foot remains extremely painful and this will often wake her at night.

She continues to be unable to bend her big toe and struggles with walking. As a result, she feels unstable and is cautious and nervous about her foot. Her right foot regularly swells with activities and she is only able to wear flat shoes. Erin also struggles with housework and childcare.

We helped Erin make a claim for surgical negligence. She was awarded over £30,000.
