Wrong Testicle Removal
If you have had the wrong testicle removed during surgery, or you have had a testicle removed without good medical reason (for example, because of a wrong diagnosis), you will be the victim of medical negligence. To find out what action to take next, you need to contact a medical negligence solicitor to discuss making a compensation claim.
Negligent orchidectomy surgery
An orchidectomy is when a testicle is surgically removed. This may be performed to treat testicular cancer, chronic testicular pain or a twisted testicle.
Before the operation, the surgical team must carefully consult a patient's medical records to verify whether the right or the left testicle is to be removed. The correct one must then be marked with a pen, ensuring the surgeon knows which side to operate on. During surgery itself, a patient will be put under a general anaesthetic and an incision made in the groin, through which the testicle is removed. If requested a prosthetic testicle can be inserted in its place, after which the incision will be sutured back together.
However, there are times when doctors actually remove the wrong testicle – either because the wrong testicle is marked, or because the surgeon fails to display due care and attention during the operation. Evidently this will be extremely traumatic for the patient who will have to undergo a second operation to remove the correct testicle, thereby leaving him infertile. This can lead to a series of emotional complications for the individual concerned who may develop body image issues, relationship difficulties or depression.
Furthermore, there are occasions in which a testicle is removed when there is no clinical need to do so. For example, if a patient is diagnosed with testicular torsion, emergency surgery will be arranged to remove the affected testicle. However, if this diagnosis is not correct and a patient is suffering a more minor problem (such as temporary testicular pain) the testicle will have been removed for no good reason.
Claiming for wrong testicle removal
If you have had the wrong testicle removed, or have had an orchidectomy which was subsequently found to be unnecessary, you must contact a solicitor as soon as possible. This is because it is very likely you have been the victim of medical negligence, meaning the level of care you received fell below an acceptable standard. As a result you will be legally entitled to claim financial compensation for the pain and suffering this has caused you, and for any expenses you have lost because of your injuries. Most claims must be made within three years of the incident, so if you think you have a case, do not delay in speaking to a medical negligence solicitor.
