When Can You Claim For Necrotising Fasciitis?

When Can You Claim For Necrotising Fasciitis?

If your necrotising fasciitis has been managed by medical professionals in a negligent manner, you could be entitled to claim compensation for the physical, emotional and financial pain you have been caused. To find out more you need to speak to a solicitor about the care you received.

What is necrotising fasciitis?

Necrotising fasciitis is a rare bacterial infection. It occurs when a certain type of bacteria get into the body via a break in the skin and reproduce at a rapid rate. When the bacteria multiply they release a poisonous chemical that causes the soft tissue to die – or in medical terms, become 'necrotic'.

When the tissue becomes necrotic it cannot be treated and must be removed. Therefore it is important for necrotising fasciitis to be diagnosed in the early stages or a patient will be left with a large area of necrotic tissue, all of which must be surgically excised.

Necrotising fasciitis and medical negligence

However, because necrotising fasciitis is a rare condition it is not always diagnosed in a timely fashion. Instead medical professionals misdiagnose the problem for another condition such as cellulitis, or simply do not know what is causing a patient's symptoms and thus provide no treatment whatsoever.

Nevertheless, just because it is a rare condition does not mean that medical professionals are excused when they fail to make quick diagnosis. All medical practitioners should at the very least recognise the typical signs of infection and carry out urgent tests to identify what type of bacteria is present. This will ensure a diagnosis is made and treatment provided without delay, preventing a patient from suffering further complications.

If medical professionals fail to appreciate the seriousness of a patient's symptoms, and therefore fail to carry out further tests and make a timely diagnosis, there will be a case of medical negligence. The same will also be true if the condition is diagnosed but the correct course of emergency treatment is not given.

Find out if you can claim for necrotising fasciitis

To find out if you can claim for necrotising fasciitis, you need to talk to a solicitor about the medical care you received. After listening to the facts of your case a medical negligence specialist will be able to suggest whether you have been the innocent victim of substandard medical care. If so, you will be able to pursue a claim for compensation, giving you the chance to obtain the financial redress you deserve.
