Suing the NHS for Negligent Acute Pancreatitis
Acute pancreatitis due to negligence during an ERCP procedure can be life-threatening and life-changing. It may also justify the patient in making a claim for compensation.
Why does the pancreas matter?
The pancreas is an organ found within the body's digestive system which is vital to the successful functioning of the human body. Nestled behind the stomach and between the stomach and the intestine, the pancreas produces both digestive enzymes and insulin, necessary to the processing of sugars in the body.
If the pancreas becomes damaged or infected, it can threaten the integrity and function of the pancreas and the life of the patient. Sepsis can develop and the patient's life-supporting organs may be starved of oxygen, leading to organ failure and death.
If the pancreas is injured during a negligent endoscopy procedure, the patient can suffer a poor long-term outcome. Such circumstances may justify a claim for compensation.
Negligent ERCP
An ERCP endoscopy is sometimes used to assess the condition of the patient's pancreas. A lighted tube carrying a small camera is used to examine part of the patient's digestive tract including the pancreas, liver and bile duct leading from the gallbladder. It is also sometimes used to carry out treatment procedures.
Whilst an ERCP is often used to examine the pancreas, or to carry out a procedure to treat a pancreatic disease, unfortunately the procedure does carry risks, one of which is the development of acute pancreatitis.
Acute pancreatitis
Acute pancreatitis causes the pancreas to become rapidly inflamed. In the long-term this can cause the pancreas to cease to function. The pancreas is essential to survival and the loss of its function can be life-threatening.
Acute pancreatitis can occasionally also prompt the patient to develop sepsis, an immune system dysfunctional response, which threatens the major organs of the body.
A patient with acute pancreatitis may require surgery to remove damaged tissue, creating additional risks. They may also require extended support in an intensive care facility.
