Ruptured intestine medical errors
There are a number of ways in which a ruptured intestine could be caused by medical negligence. Examples include:
- Failing to diagnose and treat diverticulitis
- Failing to diagnose and treat bowel cancer
- Failing to diagnose and treat other bowel conditions, such as Crohn's disease
- Injuring the intestine during surgery but failing to recognise and repair the injury
- Not recognising a perforated bowel after a colonoscopy or ERCP
In some of the aforementioned examples, a ruptured intestine is a recognised and accepted risk. For instance, the bowel can be injured during an ERCP, or damaged during a surgical procedure such as a hysterectomy.
However, the injury must be recognised and repaired within a reasonable amount of time. It is not acceptable to send a patient home if he/she is complaining of abdominal pain and other symptoms – particularly if the patient has recently undergone surgery or a medical procedure.
Unfortunately there are occasions when this happens. Even if a patient explicitly reports abdominal pain and feeling unwell, they are sent home without further investigation. In some cases, the patient will only begin to develop symptoms once they are home, but when medical help is sought their concerns are ignored. This means that a surgical repair is further delayed.
In some of the examples described above, it is not a matter of recognising and repairing the ruptured intestine. Rather, the rupture should not occur in the first place. Conditions like diverticulitis should be treated before serious complications arise. Diverticulitis can be treated with a course of antibiotics, or in severe cases, surgery.
Making a claim for a ruptured intestine
Whatever the circumstances that led to your ruptured intestine, if you think medical error is to blame, you need to speak to a solicitor.
A ruptured intestine can result in serious harm, as the contents of the bowel will spill out into the abdominal cavity. This can make the patient critically unwell with an infection called peritonitis. It can entail a long recovery period, significant scarring and sever psychological trauma. Some cases will be fatal.
If you have gone through such pain and suffering because of medical mistakes, you deserve to be compensated for your injuries. To find out if you can claim, please get in touch with our team of solicitors today.
