Raising Awareness of Sepsis
Death from sepsis is a global problem as well as an issue facing the healthcare service in the UK. Global action is being taken to tackle this killer illness.
The sepsis context
Worldwide, sepsis is thought to cause the deaths of approximately 8 million people each year, of which 6 million are infants. Around 27,000,000 people are thought to develop the illness each year.
In the UK, that figure is approximately 250,000 people with over 40,000 dying from it. Shockingly, it is thought that around 10,000 of those who die from sepsis in the UK each year, could have survived with greater awareness of the illness, faster diagnosis and swifter treatment.
Global Sepsis Alliance
The Global Sepsis Alliance aims to raise awareness of sepsis worldwide, thereby helping the fight to reduce the number of deaths globally from this appalling illness.
In order to raise awareness as broadly, as swiftly and as effectively as possible, the GSA has introduced World Sepsis Day, The World Sepsis Congress, the Global Sepsis Awards and a host of other profile-raising events worldwide.
Global Sepsis Awards 2018
This year's Global Sepsis Awards, organised by the Global Sepsis Alliance, adopted a truly international approach, recognising the work of organisation, governments and individuals worldwide.
For example, The Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia was recognised for its work in improving sepsis awareness and care in Saudi Arabia.
The Sepsis Alliance in the United States was also recognised for its work to raise awareness of sepsis and support those suffering with the illness.
The Fundacion Sepsis Mexico was also recognised for its work to spread the word about the treat of sepsis.
World Sepsis Day 2018
For over five years, World Sepsis Day has been organising events to raise awareness of sepsis, encouraging and organising events globally. Not simply a matter of trying to increase public knowledge of this life-threatening condition, world sepsis day also offers training, conferences and other events to support the education of healthcare professionals.
Each year in September events take place worldwide to increase public knowledge about sepsis. Sporting events, social events, picnics, lectures, exhibitions and competitions, all designed to make people aware of this killer disease, its red flag symptoms and the need for urgent action if you or a loved one may be developing the illness.
World Sepsis Congress 2018
Alongside World Sepsis Day, the World Sepsis Congress, hosted by the Global Sepsis Alliance, is an online event taking place on 5th and 6th September this year. Accessible worldwide, it will be providing talks from more than 100 speakers about sepsis-related issues.
International Sepsis Symposium 2018
Also in September, the international Sepsis Symposium will be taking place in Glasgow. This event is aimed at supporting medical practitioners in their fight against sepsis and will be offering a wide range of speakers.
Organisations fighting sepsis and raising awareness of the symptoms and effects of the illness, supporting those who have suffered from it and their families exist worldwide.
The UK Sepsis Trust
In the UK, the UK Sepsis Trust aims to reduce the number of preventable deaths by raising public awareness and supporting the education of medical practitioners, as well as working alongside NICE to produce sepsis guidelines.
Providing diagnostic tools and undertaking extensive campaigns, they aim to broaden awareness of the key features of sepsis and reduce the average time to diagnosis.
Medical negligence
The fact remains, however, that far too many avoidable deaths from sepsis occur in the UK, and far too many people who survive suffer debilitating long-term symptoms due to delays in diagnosis.
