Necrotising Fasciitis Complications

Necrotising fasciitis is a serious infection which must be treated as soon as possible if a patient is to avoid developing considerable complications. If medical professionals fail to make a diagnosis and provide treatment, despite a patient displaying obvious signs of infection, there will be grounds for a compensation claim.

Urgent treatment of necrotising fasciitis

Necrotising fasciitis is an infection that occurs when certain bacteria enter a break in the skin and multiply. As they reproduce, they release a poisonous toxin that attacks the flesh and underlying fascia, thereby earning it the name the 'flesh-eating disease'. Any area of tissue that is infected then becomes necrotic – in other words, it dies.

The necrotising fasciitis bacteria reproduce extremely quickly, meaning the infection spreads at an alarming rate. If not stopped in time, the area of infection will grow and grow, causing more and more tissue to become necrotic.

As can be imagined, this will lead to very serious complications for the individual concerned, which is why urgent treatment of necrotising fasciitis is vital. Antibiotics should be administered immediately, and emergency debridement surgery performed to remove the necrotic tissue. This is the only way to remove the bacteria and prevent the infection spreading any further.

Complications of necrotising fasciitis

But unfortunately medical professionals do not always recognise the signs and symptoms of necrotising fasciitis, meaning the urgent treatment a patient so desperately needs is not provided. This can lead to terrible complications, as the entire area of necrotic tissue will need to be excised. This can result in a huge deformity, and depending upon where the infection has taken hold, may involve an amputation. Again, depending upon the site of infection, a patient with necrotising fasciitis may also lead to kidney failure, breathing difficulties, septic shock and even death.

Claiming for necrotising fasciitis complications

If this has happened to you or your loved one, you will of course be extremely upset – especially if complications arose due to the inability of medical professionals to make a timely diagnosis.

However, there might be something that you can do, as you could be in a position to make a claim against the GP or health service responsible. This will allow you to obtain compensation for the pain and suffering you have endured because of medical incompetence. You will also be able to recover the financial losses you have incurred because of your injuries.

To find out more about claiming for necrotising fasciitis, you need to speak to medical negligence solicitor as soon as possible.
