Making a Claim for Delayed Diagnosis of Meningioma
Although most meningiomas are benign (tumours which will not spread to other parts of the body) and slow-growing, it is still important that they are diagnosed and treated promptly to limit the impact on other areas of the brain.
Impact of a meningioma
A meningioma is a common form of brain tumour. It develops in the meninges, the protective covering of the brain and spinal cord and, depending on the location of the meningioma, the patient may experience different symptoms. If the meningioma remains untreated, these symptoms may be on-going and worsening.
A failure to diagnose a meningioma may allow it to continue to grow, causing greater damage to surrounding structures and features of the brain.
- Visual loss - a meningioma can cause partial or total visual loss, blurred vision or double vision. This may be because the meningioma is impacting on the optic nerve or the brain's ability to interpret visual signals. Usually only one eye is affected. However, this can have a significant impact on the patient's quality of life affecting their ability to work and drive.
- Seizures - where the patient may jerk or faint.
- Mobility problems - this may be due to difficulties with coordination or due to altered sensation in the limbs depending on where the meningioma is located.
- A build-up of cerebrospinal fluid around the brain which can potentially cause brain damage
Symptoms of a meningioma
A patient who is developing a meningioma is likely to be exhibiting symptoms such as persistent headaches alongside problems with sight and mobility. Other symptoms may also be present depending on the location of the meningioma.
A CT scan or MRI scan is most likely to be needed in order to confirm the diagnosis of a meningioma.
A failure to recognise the possible symptoms of a meningioma and or a failure to refer a patient for the appropriate tests may be regarded as negligent. If the patient subsequently develops severe, long-term problems due to the subsequent delay in initiating their treatment, there may be a case for a compensation claim.
