Long-Term Disability from TB Meningitis

Long-Term Disability from TB Meningitis

If Tuberculosis Meningitis (TB meningitis) is not diagnosed and treated quickly enough, the patient will be left with long-term disabilities of a life-changing nature.

If your loved one has suffered in this way, please get in touch with our legal team to discuss making a medical negligence compensation claim.

Consequences of delayed treatment of TB meningitis

TB meningitis is when the tuberculosis bacteria spread to the meninges which surround the brain and spinal cord. It is a serious condition which, if not treated in time, can result in long-term disability or death.

If a patient does survive the illness, the long-term disabilities they are left with will be very severe in nature. Often there will be persisting physical, neuro-physical and behavioural problems which can be attributed to the TB meningitis.

For instance, there may be:

  • Symptomatic seizure disorder – i.e. epilepsy
  • Moderate or severe cognitive impairment – i.e. lacking mental capacity
  • Abnormal eye movements
  • Reduced facial movements
  • Altered voice and difficulty swallowing
  • Reduced manual dexterity
  • Spastic paraplegia – i.e. disabled from the waist down
  • Double incontinence

Future needs and prognosis

These complications are likely to be permanent. Therefore the patient will require 24-hour nursing care, will not be able to work again and will need assistance with virtually all daily tasks. Their needs may be such that the patient is located to a specialist care home.

If a patient is able to return home, a 24-hour care package and accessible accommodation will be required. Further input from various medical disciplines may also help to improve the patient's independence and quality of life. This might include speech and language therapist, physiotherapy and clinical psychology.

The patient's life expectancy will be significantly reduced by their injuries and consequences. There is also an increased risk of further complications developing, such as uncontrolled epilepsy and chronic neurological disability.

Compensation

If your loved one has been left with serious, life-changing injuries such as those described above, please get in touch with us today. If an unacceptable delay in diagnosing and treating TB meningitis is to blame for your loved one's condition, there will be grounds for a medical negligence claim.

Although making a claim will not undo the awful situation your family is facing, it does provide you with a chance to obtain some form of redress. The compensation awarded will also help to cover your loved one's care needs, the cost of which can be substantial.
