Intestinal Polyps Not Removed
If your intestinal polyps were not removed and you went on to develop bowel cancer, there could be a case of medical negligence. Please contact us at Glynns Solicitors for more information.
Bowel polyps
Intestinal polyps, or bowel polyps, are abnormal growths in the lining of the bowel. Anyone can get polyps, and in fact they are a common condition, affecting around 15-20% of the UK's population.
Sometimes there will be just one polyp, usually measuring under a centimetre. Other people will develop multiple polyps. There are certain conditions that are associated with multiple polyp growth, including Lynch Syndrome and Peutz-Jegher.
Bowel polyps may not cause any symptoms, although they can be associated with pain, diarrhoea/discomfort, and blood in the stool.
Removing bowel polyps
Bowels polyps are often benign when they are found, meaning they are non-cancerous. However, they can be pre-malignant, meaning that they can become cancerous over time. Because of this, bowel polyps must be removed, as this will prevent a benign growth from turning into a cancerous tumour.
Polyps are usually removed during a colonoscopy. A wire is looped around the polyp and it is cauterised with an electric current. Polyps do not contain pain fibres, so this will not hurt. If a polyp is very large, surgery may be needed instead.
Once removed, the polyps must be sent to histology for testing. This will verify whether or not the polyp is cancerous, or has any pre-cancerous changes. If there are signs of cancer, regular monitoring and/or further treatment will be needed.
Failure to remove bowel polyps
If you were diagnosed with bowel polyps but they were not removed, there will have been a substandard level of care. If this has led you to develop bowel cancer or other complications, you could be in a position to make a claim.
As mentioned above, bowel polyps are pre-malignant. They must be taken out because there is a chance they will turn cancerous. It is much better to have a simply polyp removal than treat bowel cancer.
If your bowel polyps were not removed when they should have been, causing you to suffer unnecessary harm, you need to speak to a solicitor. Please get in touch with us at Glynns Solicitors for more information.
