Hospital Infection DVT
If you or a loved one have suffered the long-term effects of Deep Vein Thrombosis acquired following an infection whilst in hospital, you may be entitled to make a claim for compensation.
The long-term threat of DVT
Undiagnosed DVT can prove fatal. The blood clots normally associated with deep vein thrombosis usually occur in the legs but if a portion of the clot travels through the bloodstream to the lungs, it can lodge in the blood vessels of the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. It is thought that approximately one third of these cases prove fatal.
Developing DVT in hospital
Patients in hospital are particularly susceptible to developing DVT due to possible prolonged in activity. Patients being admitted to hospital should be assessed on arrival for the level of risk which they present of developing DVT and appropriate care should be planned and maintained.
They may need to be given blood-thinning medication or to wear compression stockings.
They also require close monitoring for symptoms of DVT such as pain, swelling and redness in the leg.
Patients undergoing long surgical procedures are also more vulnerable to developing DVT and measures should be taken both before and after surgery to minimise and monitor their risk.
Infections and DVT
Patients who have suffered an infection, particularly a urinary or respiratory infection such as pneumonia are believed to be more susceptible to developing DVT in the following months and this should alert medical practitioners to their symptoms.
The risk of a particular patient succumbing to infection should be taken into account not only when planning their surgical procedure but also in assessing their DVT risk.
Medical negligence
If you or a loved one have suffered the serious impact of deep vein thrombosis due to a failure to diagnose your symptoms accurately or to provide you with an appropriate standard of care whilst you were in hospital, you may wish to consider making a claim for compensation.
