Delayed Diagnosis of Overactive Thyroid

Delayed Diagnosis of Overactive Thyroid

If your GP failed to diagnose your overactive thyroid, resulting in serious complications, you could be entitled to pursue a medical negligence claim.

Diagnosing an overactive thyroid

An overactive thyroid is when the thyroid gland in the neck produces too many hormones. High levels of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream will speed up the body's metabolism, causing symptoms such as:-

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Nervousness and anxiety
  • Swelling in the neck
  • Hyperactivity/nervous energy
  • Loss of sexual desire
  • Fatigue
  • Increased need to pass urine/faeces
  • Loose bowel motions

The diagnosis of an overactive thyroid will begin with these symptoms. A patient who presents to their GP with some or all of the aforementioned problems should be suspected of having a thyroid problem. A blood test will confirm whether or not there are excessive thyroid hormones in the blood.

Delayed diagnosis

An overactive thyroid is a common condition that can be effectively treated with medication.

However, complications will arise if the condition is left untreated. This is because the hormone levels in the body will become so high that certain bodily functions are affected. For example, a woman may stop ovulating, making it difficult for her to become pregnant. Female patients may also suffer miscarriages and irregular periods.

If there is a delay in treatment, it may be hard to bring the thyroid levels under control, once the condition has been diagnosed. In such cases it may be necessary for the thyroid gland to be removed altogether.

Claiming for a delayed diagnosis

If you have suffered serious complications – such as infertility – because doctors failed to diagnose your overactive thyroid, you could be entitled to make a claim.

An overactive thyroid is a common condition that can be easily diagnosed and treated. A competent medical practitioner in the UK should be able to recognise the symptoms of an overactive thyroid and carry out the necessary diagnostic tests. A failure to do provide this level of care will be deemed substandard. If this has directly caused you to develop life-changing problems, you will be considered the innocent victim of medical negligence.
