Consulting Women in Developing a Women's Health Strategy

Consulting Women in Developing a Women's Health Strategy

The government has today launched a consultation, available to all, regarding the issues which should inform a future Women's Health Strategy.

Recognising that some health issues are particular to women, that some may affect women differently to men, and that some areas of women's experience of health may not be fully understood, the consultation is looking to gather evidence, ideas and views which can start to address these issues.

In its statement, the government stated a desire to take an 'end to end' look at women's health, from adolescence to old age.

As observed by the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care in his introduction to the consultation, the impact of a lack of understanding of women's health 'can lead to poorer advice and diagnosis and, as a result, worse outcomes'.

The consultation will be available for input until the end of May 2021.

Wide-ranging consultation

Aspects of health for which the consultation seeks responses include the following:

  • Women's health
  • Women's voices
  • Information and education on women's health
  • Women's health through life
  • Women's health in the workplace
  • Research, evidence and data
  • The impact of Covid-19 on women's health

The consultation asks for participants to identify the five aspects of women's health that they would wish a strategy to concentrate on, selecting from topics such as disability, mental health, gynaecological conditions, fertility, sexual health, cancer, musculoskeletal disorders, autism, arthritis and many more.

Misunderstanding women's health

Poor understanding of the many and varied issues specific to the ways in which women's health functions, may lead to misdiagnoses or delays in diagnosis and support which could prove life-changing or, indeed, fatal.

Where a failure to recognise symptoms or to take the appropriate action such as making a referral or ensuring that safety-netting systems are in place leads to a poor long-term outcome, it may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.

Claiming compensation

A successful compensation claim can provide recompense not only for a woman's pain and suffering but for the financial losses which she may have suffered as a result of the negligence.

If substandard medical care has left a woman unable to work for example, a compensation claim should address this outcome.
