Compensation for Spinal Epidural Abscess Diagnosis Delay
A delay in diagnosing a spinal epidural abscess can leave the patient with long-term dysfunction. If the delay is due to medical failings, it may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.
Function loss and spinal abscesses
A spinal epidural abscess is the build-up of pus in the spine due to infection. If diagnosis of this condition is delayed, the abscess can begin to put pressure on surrounding nerves, leading to possible permanent nerve dysfunction. As the abscess increases in size, so too may the impact on the affected nerve or nerves.
The nerves are responsible for passing messages of sensation and movement between the brain and central nervous system, and all other parts of the body, such as the limbs, the bowel and the bladder. If nerves become compressed, they may suddenly or gradually lose their ability to function, causing neurological losses to the patient.
A prompt diagnosis and investigation, such as an MRI scan, followed by prompt treatment, which may be surgical or antibiotic, is necessary to minimise the risk of permanent and debilitating problems for the patient.
Diagnosis of a spinal abscess
Caused by infection, the symptoms which might indicate that the patient is developing an abscess in the spine include a high temperature and back pain. When a patient presents to their medical practitioner with these symptoms, it is important that the possibility of a spinal abscess is considered in order to avoid a misdiagnosis and a delay in treatment. The patient may already be displaying some loss of nerve function.
It may also be significant if the patient comes into an 'at-risk' category such as having a weak immune system or having recently undergone a surgical procedure on the spine.
Medical negligence
A patient suffering from permanent nerve damage may be affected in a wide variety of ways. Whether their mobility is affected, their continence or their speech and cognitive functions, their ability to remain independent may be compromised and their ability to work and earn an income may be restricted.
If the long-term problems experienced by the patient are due to a delay by medical professionals in diagnosing and treating a spinal abscess, it might be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.
