Compensation For Negligent Stroke Care
Poor-quality medical management of a mini-stroke can leave the patient vulnerable to something far move severe. It may also justify a claim for compensation.
Failing to diagnose a stroke
Failing to recognise the symptoms of a stroke may mean that the patient does not get the care they need.
A stroke occurs when oxygen and blood is impeded in its access to the brain, usually by a blood clot. An individual may experience a severe stroke, which can cause lasting damage, or they may suffer a mini-stroke or trans ischaemic attack, the effects of which are less damaging.
If an individual has suffered a mini-stroke, it may suggest that they are susceptible to another, more severe.
The effects of a severe stroke can be dramatic, including loss of mobility or coordination on one side, speech and communication difficulties, bladder or bowel problems, fatigue and pain.
An individual can become permanently disabled by a stroke. Their ability to work and to remain independent can be compromised, making them dependent on care and risking the loss of income.
It is, therefore, crucial that a patient who may be demonstrating signs, symptoms or risk factors of a stroke receive a diagnosis and treatment to minimise their risk of further problems.
Diagnosing a stroke
Symptoms and risk factors which might suggest that a patient is either experiencing a mini-stroke or is vulnerable to a stroke would include the following:
- Facial weakness
- Weakness in one arm
- Speech difficulties
- High blood pressure
- Being overweight
- Having high cholesterol
If the patient is diagnosed with a possible mini-stroke, they are likely to be referred for further tests such as a brain scan. This would lead to treatment for the under-lying cause to reduce their risk of another stroke occurring.
If the patient does not receive a diagnosis, they will not receive the appropriate treatment and may later suffer another, more serious, stroke.
Claiming compensation for medical negligence
If a medical professional fails to recognise and respond to the symptoms of a stroke, they may be regarded as having provided substandard care.
