Claiming Compensation for Missed TIA

Claiming Compensation for Missed TIA

For medical professionals to fail to recognise that a patient has suffered a TIA can leave the patient at risk of a serious stroke and all the possible associated effects. It may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.

A severe stroke can be fatal. Those who survive a severe stroke can suffer long-term and life-changing effects. If medical professionals had the opportunity to diagnose and treat a TIA but failed to do so, they may be regarded as having acted negligently. If their patient subsequently suffers the long-term impact of a severe stroke, it might be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.

A severe stroke can leave its victim disabled in many ways and in need of considerable support. They may not be able to return to work and their income can suffer dramatically as a result. They may no longer be able to function independently in their own home and require alternative accommodation or significant changes to their own home.

A transient ischaemic attack

A TIA, or transient ischaemic attack, can be an indication that the patient may go on to suffer a severe stroke and, as such, needs to be recognised as promptly as possible.

Signs that someone may be suffering from a TIA or a stroke include weakness in the arm, difficulties with speech and a loss of facial muscle control.

For a medical practitioner to misdiagnose the symptoms of a TIA may be regarded as substandard care. If the patient is left with a false reassurance that they are not at risk, it can leave them vulnerable to a severe stroke and the associated problems. In these circumstances, a compensation claim may be a suitable way forward.
