C-Section Infection Negligence and Compensation
A failure to diagnose and treat an infection in a C-section wound can occasionally lead to severe consequences for the new mother. It may be appropriate to make a claim for compensation.
Wound infections
As with any cut or incision to the skin, a caesarean section wound can allow bacteria to trigger an infection. This is a known risk and it is the duty of medical professionals to minimise this risk and be alert to any signs that the woman is developing an infection.

- A woman who is due to give birth via a caesarean section should be assessed for their risk of infection and, where considered appropriate, should be given prophylactic antibiotics to try to prevent this occurring
- A caesarean section wound should be monitored carefully for any indications of infection such as redness or tenderness
- Any suspicion of infection should receive prompt attention and treatment

Infection impact
A severe infection, such as necrotising fasciitis, or a sepsis response, can result in significant disability, requiring the new mother to remain in hospital undergoing traumatic treatment at a time when she should be at home bonding with her baby.
She may be left disabled and psychologically damaged by the effects of a severe infection and may find it difficult to pick up the pieces of her old life. Returning to work can be problematic and may result in the woman suffering a loss of income.
Compensation claims for medical negligence
If a patient suffers significant unexpected consequences, such as disability and loss of income, due to substandard medical care, they are entitled to make a claim for compensation.
The aim of this is to restore the individual to the financial position they would have experienced had the medical negligence not occurred.
