Breast Reduction
If you have opted to undergo breast reduction surgery (known medically as mammaplasty) and something has gone wrong, you will probably be feeling very disappointed, and will most likely be left in a significant amount of physical and emotional pain. What's more, you may have to undergo further surgery to correct the mistakes which have been made. If this has happened to you, you should contact a medical negligence lawyer, as you may be entitled to compensation.
Breast Reduction Surgery
Breast reduction is an elective cosmetic surgery procedure undertaken by women who are unhappy with the size of their breasts for one reason or another. This may be because it induces a feeling of self-consciousness, or that one breast is significantly bigger than the other, or it may even be that having large breasts is leading to physical discomfort, such as back pain, neck pain, or rashes.
The procedure involves a surgeon making a number of incisions and removing excess skin and fat from the breasts, which are then reshaped and the nipples repositioned. It is important to discuss with your surgeon exactly what you are hoping to achieve, as there are several different methods of mammaplasty which will achieve varying results. All, however, will leave a scar around the areola of the breast. After surgery you should be advised on appropriate post-operative care, which may include wearing a well-fitting sports bra for a couple weeks after the procedure.
The final size of your breasts may not become immediately noticeable due to swelling. Once the healing process is complete, your new breast size should remain the same. Breasts will grow, however, if you put on weight, become pregnant, or have had a reduction at an age when breasts are still developing.
In addition to the visible scarring left on the breast, there are a number of other negative side-effects and consequences of mammaplasty. For example, breast feeding is almost impossible after a breast reduction, and nipple sensitivity is greatly reduced, a problem which may extend to the whole of the breast.
Breast Reduction Surgery and Medical Negligence
However, if you have experienced any complications as a result of breast reduction surgery, it may be that is was due to the negligence of your healthcare professional. This may include:-
- Lopsided or asymmetrical breasts;
- Infection;
- Bleeding (haematoma);
- Disfigurement;
- Nerve damage;
- Excessive scarring.
If you have opted to undergo cosmetic breast reduction surgery and something has gone wrong, you may be experiencing a great deal of distress, emotionally and physically. Furthermore, if it is necessary to have corrective treatment, you may be concerned about the financial implications and whether you really want to receive surgery from the same consultant who undertook the first operation.
It may be that the mistakes made during breast reduction surgery were entirely preventable and occurred as a result of medical negligence. If this is so, you may be entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering, as well as privately funded corrective surgery. If you believe you have been the victim of medical negligence, you should contact a medical negligence lawyer to discuss your options.
