Bladder Stitched to Vagina During Surgery

Bladder Stitched to Vagina During Surgery

If your bladder has been stitched to your vagina during a hysterectomy, the level of medical care will be considered substandard. You will therefore be legally entitled to claim compensation for the damages you have wrongfully incurred.

Vagina and bladder stitched together

The bladder lies in front of the cervix and vagina, making it vulnerable during abdominal/gynaecological surgery. This is especially true of hysterectomy procedures, where the uterus is surgically removed.

In order to minimise the risk of injury during a hysterectomy, the bladder must be mobilised downwards and clamped for the duration of the procedure. If this is not achieved by the surgeon, the bladder will be in harm's way as the vaginal vault is sutured closed. Consequently it is possible that the bladder and vagina will be accidently stitched together.

If this mistake is not noticed by the surgical team, a patient will develop complications in the post-operative period. This is because a patient will have a vesico-vaginal fistula, whereby there is an open channel between the vagina and bladder. This will cause a patient to have:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Difficulty urinating, necessitating a catheter
  • Repeated urinary tract infections
  • Episodes of urinary incontinence

Once the error is diagnosed, a patient will require another operation to rectify the problem. However, a patient may be left with permanent complications, such as long-term bladder damage.

Has this happened to you?

If your bladder was stitched to your vagina during surgery and the mistake was not recognised and repaired during the operation, you will be considered the victim of medical negligence.

This is because the standard of care provided to you will be deemed unacceptable. A competent surgeon should take reasonable steps to protect the bladder from injury, not only while the uterus is being removed, but also while the vaginal vault is being sutured closed. If there is a failure to ensure that the edge of the bladder is not too close to the vaginal vault, resulting in an injury, there will be a case of medical negligence.
