Report Finds Basildon University Hospital Lacking
At the end of 2009 a report by The Care Quality Commission (CQC) found numerous problems with the Basildon University Hospital after an inspection.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) carried out an unexpected examination of the hospital and their inspectors found the following evidence:
- Floors and curtains stained with blood
- Blood splattered on trays used to carry equipment
- A childrens blood pressure cuff heavily stained with blood
- Items that should only be used once still in use
- Equipment in the resuscitation room that was past the 'use by' date
- Badly soiled mattresses in the A & E department with stains soaked through to the foam filling
- Suction machines contaminated with fluid inside and out with what looked like mould growing on the equipment
The CQC said 'systemic failings' had led to 'persistently high mortality rates', leading to the deaths of up to 400 patients a year. This investigation discovered that an internal investigation by the Trust itself into the death rates had failed to find anything wrong.
A report into The Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust found earlier that there were up to 1,200 avoidable deaths.
Summary
The reports clearly show significant problems with the Basildon University Hospital NHS Trust and it will be checked regularly to ensure that improvements are made, particularly emergency admissions where significant problems were uncovered.
