What does antibiotic poisoning mean?
Antibiotic poisoning can refer to a number of medical mistakes, including:
- Prescribing antibiotics which the patient is known to be allergic to
- Prescribing the wrong dosage of antibiotics, such as a dose that is dangerously high
- Not monitoring a patient who is taking antibiotics with known side-effects, such as gentamicin
- Prescribing antibiotics that are harmful to a patient because of an existing medical condition – e.g. gentamicin should not be given to people with kidney failure
Antibiotic poisoning and gentamicin
Therefore antibiotic poisoning can arise in a number of ways, although problems commonly relate to the prescription of gentamicin.
Gentamicin is a type of antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections, often of the respiratory tract. It can be a useful tool where other types of antibiotic are either resistant, or are not applicable due to patient allergies.
However, gentamicin does come with certain side effects, which is why a patient must be monitored while taking the medication. If there is too much gentamicin in the bloodstream, it can lead to gentamicin poisoning, resulting in either kidney damage (nephrotoxicity) or ear damage (ototoxicity).
Because of the dangers of a gentamicin overdose, it is also vital that the correct amount is administered. This is calculated upon a patient's weight and age.
Gentamicin given to someone with kidney failure
Furthermore, gentamicin must not be given to anyone who has kidney dysfunction or hearing issues, as the antibiotics could make their condition worse. If a patient is known to have kidney failure or problems with their inner ear, they must not be prescribed gentamicin. Alternative antibiotics should be explored instead.
Can I claim compensation for antibiotic poisoning?
If you or your loved one has been harmed by antibiotic poisoning, there could be grounds for a medical negligence compensation claim. A solicitor will be able to tell you whether there has been a substandard level of care. If this has caused unnecessary pain and suffering, you could be entitled to compensation.
