Aneurysm Missed On Previous MRI Scan
If medical practitioners fail to detect an aneurysm on an MRI scan, ultimately resulting in a patient suffering a catastrophic aneurysm bleed, there could be grounds for a medical negligence claim.
If this has happened to you or your loved one, please get in touch with us to discuss the possibility of a compensation claim.
Aneurysm
An aneurysm is when there is a weakness in an artery wall, causing it to bulge outwards. Aneurysms can arise anywhere in the body, although it is most common in the brain.
An aneurysm may not cause any symptoms on its own. But if it is not treated, the bulge can burst or rupture, allowing blood to leak out of the vessel. This will be extremely dangerous, particularly if there is bleeding on the brain, as it can lead to devastating neurological injuries.
Preventing an aneurysm rupture
To prevent an aneurysm rupturing, treatment should be provided – either with surgery, or with medication and regular monitoring.
However, prevention of course depends upon an aneurysm being detected beforehand, something which can be difficult as it will not always produce any symptoms.
If a patient has not previously sought medical help for the symptoms of an aneurysm and he/she goes on to suffer a ruptured aneurysm (also called a haemorrhage), blame cannot be attributed to the medical profession.
But sometimes the patient will experience symptoms and will be referred for an MRI scan. This will show whether or not there is an aneurysm in the brain. If so, treatment must be provided as appropriate.
Aneurysm visible on MRI scan missed
Sadly there are cases in which medical practitioners have assessed the images of an MRI scan, yet have failed to identify an aneurysm, and thus failed to follow-up and treat the patient. The MRI scan is reported as normal, only for the patient to suffer a haemorrhage, which could have been avoided had the mistake not been made.
When an aneurysm visible on an MRI scan is missed, there will be a breach of duty. This means the medical practitioner(s) involved has not provided an acceptable standard of care. If this causes a patient harm – namely, if the patient later experiences a haemorrhage – there will be grounds for a medical compensation claim.
Expert legal help
A ruptured aneurysm that could have been prevented will be a traumatic thing to come to terms with. It will almost certainly life-changing, if not fatal, complications. All this could have been avoided, had doctors detected the aneurysm on the previous MRI scan.
