A serious incident investigation has been launched into how what should have been a simple operation turned into a shocking ‘never event’ for a child at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children.
The BBC has reported the distressing case of a young boy who attended hospital for a minor procedure to deal with an undescended testicle only for his surgeon to accidentally operate on the descended and healthy testicle, effectively rendering it unable to function.
The re-positioning of an undescended testicle is usually a short and successful procedure.
Operating on the incorrect location such as the wrong kidney, the wrong testicle or the wrong eye, is considered to be a ‘never event’. This is an occurrence that should never happen during surgical procedures.
