Corporate Manslaughter Act
The Corporate Manslaughter Act came into force on the 6th April 2008.
The new legislation covers all companies and organisations, including public bodies such as the police force and army, and is designed to increase protection to all employees. Failure by the organisations to meet the standards imposed will lead to punishment.
Any organisation now found guilty of gross negligence in the event of one of their employee's deaths may now face a charge of corporate manslaughter. The possible penalty is an unlimited fine on the company, but also to the company having to publish details of their conviction. All employers should carry out a thorough review of their Health and Safety policy to ensure it meets the current best practice standards.
