BBC Wales has just revealed the scale of the lack of health service provision across Wales over the past winter.
According to the report, in several health authorities there were times when there was no GP out-of–hours provision whatsoever.
Overall, the research shows that, across the whole of Wales, there were thousands of hours where the GP shifts could not be filled. One example is in the Cardiff and Vale Local Health Board where over 5,500 hours of out-of-hours shifts could not be covered during the six month period to March 2018.
A failure to provide GP cover at these times would inevitably lead to increased waiting times for assessment and treatment and put patients’ health at risk. It is likely that it would also increase the pressure on Accident & Emergency Units.
