The NHS has identified that over £200 million per year is being wasted by patients not turning up to appointments, as reported by the BBC.
NHS England has estimated that this is the equivalent to employing an additional 2,000 plus GPs or carrying out 58,000 hip operations.
Recent research by The Doctor, the new magazine of the British Medical Association, has also revealed the levels of NHS expenditure on external consultancy.
According to data provided in response to Freedom of Information requests, around £26 million has been given to private consultancy firms in payment for reviewing NHS services. Kent and Medway NHS Trust alone appears to have spent over £8 million on external consultancy.
In addition, the article raises concerns regarding the cost of a swathe of new managerial posts which appear to have been created nationwide in order to progress changes in the NHS.
