But American scientists have discovered a new antibiotic family in soil. Following the analysis of more than 1,000 soil samples, scientists at the Rockefeller University in New York have identified malacidin antibiotics, a natural chemical compound which offers hope of fighting some drug-resistant bacterial infections.
However, they will not help in the treatment of infections such as pneumonia and urinary tract infections.
