A new report into cancer survival rates and access to cancer medicine in the UK and Europe has revealed some shocking statistics.
Cancer sufferers in the UK have a shorter survival expectation in 90% of cancers in comparison to many of their European peers.
The new report, commissioned by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, used the international benchmark of survival rates five years after receiving treatment. It found that the UK has the worst survival rate in Europe for ovarian cancer and the second worse survival rate for lung cancer and pancreatic cancer.
A comparison with the survival rates of women with cancer in the UK and France suggested that, with the same level of care, 100,000 British women could survive the disease in the next ten years.
An explanation for this may be found in the identification that the UK spends a significantly smaller percentage of its GDP on healthcare and cancer care than the rest of the European Union.
As quoted on the ABPI website, Emma Greenwood, Director of Policy at Cancer Research UK, commented that, “if survival is to improve, the UK needs to get better at diagnosing and treating cancer earlier to give patients the best chance of surviving their disease.”
