As reported by the BBC this month, a surgeon has been struck off the medical register for using an incorrect prosthesis in a knee replacement operation.

During a total knee replacement in 2016, the consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Chowdhury, implanted a prosthesis for a right knee instead of one for a left knee.

He subsequently failed to acknowledge his error and has, as a consequence, been struck off the medical register, meaning that he will no longer be able to work in the UK as a doctor.

Using an incorrect implant or prosthesis is what is described in healthcare as a ‘never event’. Simply put, this means that it is an occurrence which should never happen.

Other forms of ‘never event’ in healthcare include the incorrect administration of medication, leaving a ‘foreign object’ in the patient after a surgical procedure, and carrying out a procedure to the incorrect location or even the wrong patient.
