According to the BBC, a surgeon has been jailed for lying about the extent of his experience in bowel operations in order to get a lucrative consultancy position.
After approximately one year in post, Sudip Sarker was suspended from his position at Alexandra Hospital in Redditch. Following investigations, his patients were found to have a higher mortality rate after their operations than his colleagues’ patients and it transpired that the surgeon had greatly exaggerated his capacity to carry out keyhole bowel procedures.
The judge described Mr Sarker’s behaviour as “reckless and dangerous.” He further described his actions as having “consequences that were disastrous…putting people’s lives at risk.”
There will be further investigations into the deaths of some of Mr Sarker’s patients.
