New research, recently reported by the BBC, has suggested that early signs of pancreatic cancer may be discernible in stool samples.
If additional tests make similar findings, it is hoped that this might enable earlier diagnosis of this life-threatening condition which is currently very difficult to identify in its early stages.
The research, carried out in Spain, found that, in a comparison of stool and saliva samples, the stool samples showed differences which could help to flag up the presence of cancer of the pancreas.
Pancreatic cancer originates in the pancreas, the gland located near the stomach which produces insulin and digestive enzymes, assisting in the digestion of food.
Cancer research UK estimates that approximately 10,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year in the UK. With earlier diagnosis, a greater percentage of that number would be likely to survive.
