As revealed in the press at the weekend, figures recently released by NHS England have shown a dramatic deterioration in many aspects of patient care and have raised fears of a possible care crisis over the winter.
Errors in diagnosis, such as delay or failure to respond to test results, are shown to have increased by over 40% from 2013/14 to 2015/16. Likewise, incidences of surgical errors including operating at the incorrect location on the body have also increased – from 285 cases to 362 – over the same time period.
During this time, recorded incidences of poor patient care are shown to have risen from 260 to 588, an astonishing 126% increase.
Former health minister, Norman Lamb, has commented that “with clinicians too often working under intense strain, the risk of serious harm being caused to patients is increased, which can have incalculable consequences for them and their families.”
The blame for these worrying circumstances is largely being put down to under-funding, causing staff shortages at a time of increased demand.
This follows recent concerns that the NHS is heading towards its worse winter crisis in five years.
