As recently revealed in The Times, the number of people travelling abroad for medical treatment has increased dramatically over the last few years.
Information obtained from the Office for National Statistics suggests that in 2016 over 140,000 people sought treatment overseas rather than in the UK. Cosmetic surgery and dentistry are popular treatments undertaken abroad but a range of other operations may also prompt patients to travel outside the UK.
It has been suggested that reduced NHS funding may be behind this trend as NHS waiting times are increasing in many regions.
According to The Times earlier this month, 25,000 operations were cancelled in 2016 due to a shortage of beds in NHS hospitals. An increasing number of cancelled operations are also not being re-scheduled within 28 days, leaving patients uncertain as to when they will receive treatment.
