As the NHS struggles to cope with the increasing demands on its A&E services this winter, the decision was made earlier this week to postpone thousands of non-urgent operations until the end of January.
According to the BBC, twenty hospital trusts across England have declared a major incident so far this week due to the overwhelming pressures.
Furthermore, delays in receiving patients into A&E are causing additional backlogs and compromising subsequent ambulance availability.
This is always the busiest time of year for NHS services and, despite attempts to prepare for increasing demand, the service seems to be straining to deal with the weight of patient numbers.
The cancellation of operations is likely to be a cause of significant disappointment and distress to all those affected and risks patients suffering further as they wait for new appointments.
