The BBC has reported a judgement by the Professional Standards Authority that the NMC took too long to investigate a series of concerns regarding the deaths of babies in a hospital in Cumbria.
The delay by the Nursing and Midwifery Council in addressing the issues raised by Cumbrian police may have led to further deaths which could otherwise have been avoided.
Midwives who were subsequently struck off were allowed to continue working due to the delay in carrying out an investigation – a delay in some cases of up to eight years.
Between 2004 and 2014, eleven babies died at Furness General Hospital, part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust.
The BBC has reported Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care, as commenting that the NMC “needs a massive culture change so that families feel they are being listened to.”
