The UK’s Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has just revealed the shocking news that, since 2009, 450,000 women in England have failed to receive an invitation for their routine breast cancer screening appointment.
It is thought that this has led to the premature deaths of up to 270 women from breast cancer.
Caused by a computer error, this catastrophic failing has affected women who were approaching 71 at the time and were due, therefore, to receive their final breast screening appointment.
Acknowledging the scale of the problem, Jeremy Hunt, as quoted on the BBC, said that “the fact is for many years oversight of our screening programme has not been good enough.”
Early diagnosis of cancer is crucial to giving the patient the best chances of a positive outcome. A delay in diagnosis, as many women have discovered, can prove fatal.
