Widely reported in the media today, Senior Master Fontaine has ruled that survivors and families of victims of the contaminated blood scandal of the 1970s and 1980s can sue for compensation.
As mentioned in this blog in July, over 4000 people suffering with haemophilia were treated in the UK with blood contaminated with the HIV virus and Hepatitis C. Over 2,000 people died as a result.
The Prime Minister has recently announced that a public inquiry will investigate the events but, according to The Guardian, nobody has as yet been appointed to chair the inquiry.
Approximately 500 people are planning to combine in a group action against the government, claiming that the Department of Health failed to prevent injury to patients.
