The MASIC Foundation has recently launched its new Helpline, offering support to women who have suffered a severe birth tear during vaginal childbirth.
The MASIC Foundation works to raise awareness of the difficulties experienced by Mothers with Anal Sphincter Injuries in Childbirth.
Suffering a perineal tear is a risk of vaginal childbirth and, for most women, this causes a fairly small injury. For a minority, however, a severe tear, also described as a third or fourth degree tear, may occur causing appalling injury and on-going symptoms.
A 3rd or 4th degree tear causes damage to the anal sphincter, the muscles which control bowel function. Damage to these muscles can leave a woman facing the distress and disability of both wind and faecal incontinence. This means that she may not be able to prevent the accidental passing of wind and faeces.
The helpline number is 0808 164 0833.
