Last week the BBC highlighted the case of a law student who died despite having spoken with his GP practice on four occasions. Unfortunately, a face-to-face meeting was not arranged and by the time he finally underwent surgery for his condition, it was too late to save him.
According to the BBC, the Coroner expressed the view that earlier surgery “more likely than not would have been successful.”
In many medical circumstances, the timing of diagnosis and treatment can be absolutely crucial to the patient’s long-term well-being. A delay may, as in this case, prove fatal.
Where a diagnosis is uncertain, arranging for a face-to-face consultation or for further tests is essential to ensure that a misdiagnosis does not occur.
If medical professionals fail to recognise the possible significance of the patient’s symptoms or fail to take the appropriate actions, it may be possible to make a claim for compensation for the impact of that negligence.
