Pensioner David West, of Wiltshire, was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer by Salisbury NHS Trust. However, according to information revealed in the press recently, it was felt that surgery was inadvisable due to other medical conditions.
Mr. West decided to travel to America for further investigations where it was discovered that, in fact, although he had a diseased liver, he did not have liver cancer. But he did have a serious heart condition that required the replacement of two valves in the heart.
This situation has left Mr West in debt as he has not only incurred huge medical bills, but he has also been receiving housing benefit for his flat in Wiltshire whilst travelling back and forth between American and the UK to have on-going treatment. He has now been told that he has to repay thousands of pounds to Wiltshire County Council or risk losing his home.
Salisbury NHS Trust has apologised for their misdiagnosis.
Had David received the correct diagnosis in the first place, he would never have travelled to America for further investigation and treatment.
