As recently mentioned in this blog, mesh implants have led to approximately 400 women in Scotland making claims against the NHS for failed procedures causing constant pain, infections and disability.
The BBC has now revealed the extent to which this problem also exists in England, where twice as many women are said to be pursuing compensation for the dreadful effects mesh implants have had on their lives.
Mesh implants are sometimes fitted after childbirth to resolve issues of incontinence and to support internal organs which have been weakened by the processes of pregnancy and birth.
However, women across the UK and the United States are suffering from the side-effects of these implants, some being reduced to using crutches or a wheelchair because the damage is so severe.
In some instances, the manufacturers of the implants, such as Johnson and Johnson, are being sued. Women are also claiming that their surgeon did not alert them to the possible risks associated with the implant, such as cutting into the wall of the vagina or adhering to the bowel.
Although use of the implants has been suspended across much of Scotland, they are still being used by the NHS in England.
