Recent BBC analysis of NHS data has shown that waiting times for cancer treatment have increased in every region of the UK over the past four to five years.
According to the statistics, the percentage of patients waiting for more than 62 days for treatment has hit 43% in Wales and 36% in England. In Scotland, the percentage is 21% whereas in Northern Ireland it is 58%. This represents more than twice the number of patients waiting for more than 62 days in 2017 – 2018.
Government guidelines stipulate the timeframe within which cancer referrals and treatment should occur. However, the BBC quotes a representative of the Royal College of Radiologists as identifying a shortage of specialist doctors as being at the root of the treatment delays.
Inevitably, delays in treatment can lead to a significant deterioration in the patient’s condition and long-term prognosis.
