The BBC has recently reported on an astonishing case where a patient was diagnosed incorrectly with a rare form of blood cancer.
Following the diagnosis at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, the patient, Mrs Johnston, underwent 18 months of chemotherapy, causing an array of distressing and debilitating side-effects. Having been told that her immune system was now compromised, she was obliged to give up her job as an auxiliary nurse.
Pursuing a second opinion, Mrs Johnston was advised by Guy’s Hospital in London that, in fact, she did not have cancer of the blood.
The medical professionals involved in her original diagnosis had failed to arrange for an ultrasound and bone marrow biopsy to be carried out prior to diagnosis.
