The BBC has reported on the coroner’s findings in the case of a man who became infected with mycobacterium chimaera from a heater-cooler unit during heart surgery.
Although rare, other cases of this infection have been identified in the UK.
The equipment, designed by LivaNova, is used as a key part of maintaining the processing of blood during the surgery.
Unfortunately, in this particular case, the infection was diagnosed too late for treatment to prevent the patient from dying. In the meantime the man had been misdiagnosed and provided with incorrect and possibly unhelpful treatment.
The coroner concluded that neglect had contributed to the patient’s death.
