The BBC has just revealed that, following the investigation by police into the deaths of 17 babies at Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire, a healthcare professional from the hospital has been arrested on suspicion of murder.
The unidentified hospital employee is currently under suspicion regarding the murder of eight infants and the attempted murder of six more. Other deaths and suspicious incidents are also under investigation, according to the BBC.
Over a year ago, the NHS Trust asked police for their help to investigate the unusually high death rate of new-borns in the neonatal unit between 2015 and 2016 following the failure of the hospital’s own investigations to produce an explanation.
As the BBC points out, a Care Quality Commission review of the facility in 2016 observed that staffing levels on the unit ‘did not meet standards recommended by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine.’
