Five months after the report which revealed over 450 deaths due to over-prescription of drugs at Gosport Hospital, the Health Secretary has described new measures to prevent a recurrence of such shocking events.
As reported by the BBC, Matt Hancock has announced plans to address some of the underlying problems which allowed a scandal of this nature to occur:
- There is to be a review of the controlled drugs regime. It is thought that the over-prescription of drugs at Gosport continued for approximately 10 years
- There will be a “full and thorough” investigation of all hospital deaths which are not otherwise assessed by a coroner.
It is to be hoped that these measures will help to restore public faith in the accuracy, integrity and transparency associated with the prescription and administration of drugs in hospital settings.
