Jeremy Hunt, the current Health Secretary, has criticised the number of prescription mistakes being made, leading to high numbers of patients requiring hospital admission.
According to a recent report in The Times, between 5 and 8% of hospital admissions are due to errors in medication. That may relate to the prescription of the incorrect medication or an inappropriate dose.
As calculated by The Times, this could result in around one million unnecessary hospital admissions due to medication mistakes.
An NHS review is due to investigate ways to improve processes and reduce the likelihood of mistakes occurring.
The Times further quoted the response of Helen Stokes-Lampard, chairwoman of the Royal College of GPs who, whilst calling for hard-working medical practitioners not to be the butt of criticism, commented that “what we really need is a properly funded NHS.”
