A BBC analysis of official data yesterday revealed that over half of all maternity units in England do not meet required safety standards.
Recent reviews of maternity care in England have also reflected this situation.
The Ockenden Report into maternity services at Shrewsbury & Telford NHS Trust identified earlier this year that more than 200 babies could have survived had the quality of maternity care at the Trust been better. The report made more than 60 recommendations for local action plus 15 ‘immediate and essential actions’ for all maternity services.
Donna Ockenden is now in the process of commencing a new review, this time into Nottingham University Hospitals where more than 200 claims were made against maternity services between 2005/6 and 2020/21.
The new investigation was triggered after the deaths of babies at the hospitals and will take into account cases going back to 2012. It will include incidents where mothers and/or babies have ‘suffered severe harm or death’.
Although the Care Quality Commission states that 48% of units require improvement, it maintains, nonetheless, that giving birth in England is a safe experience for the majority of women.
