A new report by the British Heart Foundation Wales, marking National Heart Month, has drawn attention to gender inequalities in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease.
A survey carried out by the charity suggested that many people do not perceive women as being at risk of heart disease and that around a third of women are not confident in their recognition of heart attack symptoms.
The foundation further noted the following concerns:
• That women are more likely to be misdiagnosed or diagnosed slowly
• That women are less likely to receive optimal treatment
• That women are more likely to experience difficulties accessing cardiac rehabilitation
In reference to the report, the BBC highlighted the key symptoms of a heart attack as follows:
• Chest pain
• Pain down your left arm, neck, jaw, back
• Feeling nauseous
• Feeling light-headed
• Shortness of breath
• Coughing
• Anxiety
